In the young, high-tech city of Shenzhen, partygoers are starting to come out in droves for techno music. At the forefront of the movement are new venues like Oil Club, which is attracting a wave of international acts to the southern metropolis.

Compared with the scene in Europe, of course, China is just “a baby,” say the owners of Oil. But the growing local fanbase, combined with a crop of local music makers and tinkerers, is closing the gap fast.
